Police respond to loose lions in Beltrami County
BEMIDJI, Minn. (AP) A pair of young lions escaped from a private zoo in southern Beltrami County and were found about two blocks away wrestling with a dog in a resident's yard.
Beryl Wernberg of the Beltrami County sheriff's office says the African lions were about 6-months old and weighed about 100 pounds each. It happened about 10:25 a.m. Thursday.
Wernberg says deputies were called when someone saw the lions in the yard. Deputies and the owners of the nearby Paul Bunyan Animal Land responded.
It turned out that earlier in the day the lions, Marjan and Aslan, were playing in the temporary pen at the zoo when their combined weight managed to bump open a gate.
The incident ended when the deputies and the owners led the cubs back to their regular pen. There were no injuries, including to the dog.
